Art and Design

“Art touches the soul … art is communication … it reaches out from the canvas and passes through the eyes of the viewer right into his heart where it can leave an imprint of beauty that can make the spirit sing.”

~Nina Baldwin, artist

Art and Design Intent

At Beanfield Primary School we are building and developing a curriculum to empower and nurture curiosity and creativity. We believe that by creating their own works of art children develop practical skills, extend their imaginations, express themselves and build up a feel for what is beautiful.  We teach high quality art lessons art through an ambitious skills based curriculum, providing opportunities to develop using a range of media and materials.  Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas, with individuality and creativeness flowing through everything they do.

Art and Design Implementation

Learning about art involves an appreciation of other people’s work and the children observe the work of artists from many cultures and time, helping them to develop their own ideas and skills in new ways.  The skills they acquire are applied in blocks of lessons linked to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.
