Developing Fluency

Once children can decode confidently, their daily reading lessons focus on developing reading fluency and accuracy as well as comprehension.  A detailed timetable is followed each week which can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Fluency First Read

The reading of a short extract will be explicitly modelled to children by the teacher.  The text will be displayed under the visualiser so that all children can follow the reading.  The teacher will read the full extract aloud, text tracking with a pointer as they read.

Paired Reading

Children develop their fluency by taking it in turns to read aloud to each other.  They discuss where expression and intonation should be used and challenge each other to improve as the session goes on.

Echo Reading

Echo reading is a strategy to help children develop expressive, fluent reading. In echo reading, the teacher or confident reader reads a short segment of text, sometimes a sentence or short paragraph, and children repeat it back.

Independent Reading

Children independently read the familiar extract in their heads using the previously taught strategies to support them.
